  • No universal child rule: Age allowances differ by country and document. We check the latest requirements and application procedures beforehand.
  • UK example: Children under 6 do not need a neutral expression or to look directly at the camera; babies under 1 do not need their eyes open.
  • Always required: The child must be the only visible person. No adult hands, chair back, toys, dummies or other means of support may appear unless the authority expressly permits them.
  • Safe capture: A parent can support a baby out of frame. We never alter the child's facial features or replace an unsuitable background digitally when that is prohibited.

How to Photograph Baby

We normally lay the baby on the floor on top of a small mattress with a suitable coloured sheet (light gray for UK). The baby can also be placed in a baby chair covered with the light gray sheet. The requirements stipulate no visible support. If the parent needs to hold the child we normally advise placing the hands under the baby's clothing. Which ever way you choose to photograph a baby under 6 months for a passport photo there will invariably some type of shadow around the head. This is impossible to eliminate totally even with advanced studio lighting techniques

DIY Baby Passport Pictures at Home

Flash from the camera will always cause shadows as will artificial lighting. Our best advice is to photograph baby outdoors on a cloudy bright day - very common in the UK. Lay baby on a suitable light gray background and take a picture. If you intend to send the picture to us for printing out, we ask you to photograph baby leaving plenty of room above the head and take a half length picture. When you send this to us for printing we will resize the picture for the correct passport requirements. This technique can be modified to suit the baby passport requirements of any country in the world.
